AVIMP4

Modernize a dated Microsoft AVI file into a compact, universally-supported H.264 MP4.

AVI (Audio Video Interleave) is a Microsoft container from the 1990s that most often wraps MPEG-4 ASP video such as DivX or Xvid, sometimes uncompressed or older codecs. The container itself is dated: it lacks modern streaming features, has weak support for B-frames and variable frame rates, and produces large files relative to their quality. MP4 is the MPEG-4 Part 14 container that pairs efficient H.264 video with AAC audio and plays on virtually every phone, browser, and editor. Converting AVI to MP4 is a genuine re-encode when the source is Xvid or DivX: FFmpeg decodes the old codec and re-compresses it as H.264, usually shrinking the file substantially while keeping visible quality close to the original.

Convert AVI to MP4 on the canvas

Drop your file onto a Brainy Canvas board, connect the converter node, and download the result. New accounts get free starter credits — enough for roughly 66 video conversions — with no card required.

1

Add your AVI to the canvas

Drop a File node onto the Brainy Canvas board and upload the .avi clip you want to modernize.

2

Connect the Video Converter

Wire a Video Converter node to the file and choose MP4 as the target. Server-side FFmpeg decodes the DivX/Xvid stream and re-encodes it to H.264 video with AAC audio.

3

Download your MP4

When the sandbox finishes, download the standardized .mp4 ready for upload, editing, or playback anywhere.

Why convert

AVI to MP4, and what changes

  • MP4 with H.264 is supported natively by modern browsers, phones, and TVs, whereas AVI often needs a legacy codec pack to play at all.
  • Re-encoding Xvid/DivX to H.264 typically produces a noticeably smaller file at comparable visual quality.
  • MP4 supports proper streaming and fast seeking, so the file plays smoothly over the web instead of buffering awkwardly like AVI.
  • Most upload forms, editors, and social platforms accept .mp4 but reject or mishandle the older .avi container.

Under the hood

Technical notes

  • AVI and MP4 are both containers, but AVI predates modern codecs and cannot cleanly hold H.264, so the video is re-encoded rather than re-muxed.
  • Output is standardized to H.264 (libx264) video plus AAC audio inside the MP4 container, regardless of the original AVI codec.
  • DivX and Xvid are MPEG-4 ASP; converting them to H.264 (MPEG-4 AVC) is a full decode-then-encode, which takes real compute time in the sandbox.
  • Any original MP3, AC-3, or PCM audio track is transcoded to AAC and re-interleaved with the new video stream.
