AVI (Audio Video Interleave) is a Microsoft container from the 1990s that most often wraps MPEG-4 ASP video such as DivX or Xvid, sometimes uncompressed or older codecs. The container itself is dated: it lacks modern streaming features, has weak support for B-frames and variable frame rates, and produces large files relative to their quality. MP4 is the MPEG-4 Part 14 container that pairs efficient H.264 video with AAC audio and plays on virtually every phone, browser, and editor. Converting AVI to MP4 is a genuine re-encode when the source is Xvid or DivX: FFmpeg decodes the old codec and re-compresses it as H.264, usually shrinking the file substantially while keeping visible quality close to the original.
