FLVMP4

Rescue a legacy Flash Video FLV into a modern H.264 MP4 that actually plays today.

FLV (Flash Video) was the container behind Flash-era web video, typically holding older Sorenson/VP6 video or, in later files, H.264 with MP3 or AAC audio. Flash is long dead: browsers removed the plugin, and .flv files usually will not play on modern phones, editors, or players. MP4 is the modern MPEG-4 container that plays everywhere. When an FLV already contains H.264, converting to MP4 can be close to a re-mux — the stream carried into a new container. When it holds legacy Sorenson or VP6 video, FFmpeg must fully re-encode to H.264. Either way, moving to MP4 turns an unplayable relic into a file that works on today's devices and software.

Convert FLV to MP4 on the canvas

Drop your file onto a Brainy Canvas board, connect the converter node, and download the result. New accounts get free starter credits — enough for roughly 66 video conversions — with no card required.

1

Add your FLV to the canvas

Drop a File node onto the board and upload the .flv clip salvaged from an old site or archive.

2

Connect the Video Converter

Attach a Video Converter node and pick MP4. FFmpeg carries an existing H.264 stream into MP4, or fully re-encodes Sorenson/VP6 video to H.264 with AAC audio.

3

Download your MP4

Download the finished .mp4 that finally plays on modern browsers, phones, and editors.

Why convert

FLV to MP4, and what changes

  • FLV depends on Flash, which no modern browser or device supports, so MP4 is the only way to reliably play the footage.
  • When the FLV already holds H.264, the video can be repackaged into MP4 with little or no quality loss.
  • MP4 imports into current video editors, whereas .flv is often refused or misread.
  • Upload forms and platforms accept MP4 and reject the obsolete Flash Video container.

Under the hood

Technical notes

  • FLV and MP4 are both containers; if the FLV already carries H.264, FFmpeg can move the stream into MP4 with a near-lossless re-mux.
  • Legacy Sorenson Spark or VP6 video cannot go into MP4 as-is, so those sources are fully re-encoded to H.264.
  • Output standardizes to H.264 video plus AAC audio; MP3 tracks common in FLV are transcoded to AAC.
  • Flash is deprecated and unsupported in modern browsers, so MP4 is the practical destination regardless of the original FLV codec.
